Getting a copy of your credit report

An individual has the right to obtain one free copy of their credit report from any credit-reporting body every three months (Privacy Act s 20R; CR Code).

The credit-reporting body is required to provide the person with their credit report within 10 days of the request (CR Code s 19).

To obtain a free copy of their credit report, an individual needs to provide information to verify their identity to the particular credit-reporting body.

Under the recent legislative amendments – the NCCP Act and NCCP Regulations – an individual’s credit report (that is sent to that individual) includes:

  • the individual’s credit rating;

  • the information used by the credit-reporting body to derive the individual’s credit rating; and

  • how the individual’s credit information was used to determine their credit rating and how the individual’s credit rating relates to other ratings.
